It certainly has been another busy week here at Kirkliston so read on to find out what has been happening.
The Art Open Day last Thursday was a huge success and the school was buzzing at both sessions. The feedback that we have received has been overwhelmingly positive. Thank you to all those who came along and special thanks to those who filled in a feedback sheet.
P5A Assembly and Fair Trade week
P5A led a wonderful Fair Trade assembly last week, which set the scene nicely for their successful fair trade tuck-shop this week.
Our Digital Leaders had an eventful trip to the Apple Store on Tuesday. The trip began with a broken down bus but after a swift change, the Digital Leaders arrived safely at the Apple Store to take part in a number of interesting workshops. They will now use their newfound knowledge to plan a whole school assembly around digital safety.
Play in a Day
The three P5 classes produced a wonderful ‘Play in a Day’ on Wednesday with the help of the Beat Box. McHistory entertained us all with catchy songs, humour and historical facts. Well done to all involved and thank you to the parents who came along to see the production.
P2/1 led a brilliant Talent assembly today where they shared the important message of uniqueness whilst demonstrating their talents and gifts. We saw gymnastics, football, magic, a piano recital, dancing to name but a few. I was relieved to hear them announce that teachers and parents have talents too!
As I write this blog there is a very tense basketball competition taking place in the gym hall against St Margaret’s Basketball club. There was a great sense of sportsmanship in the hall as the teams played a total of 19 matches. All players received a medal for participation and we now have a new trophy for our cabinet. Well done!
Active Schools Awards Evening
A number of staff will be attending the Active Schools Awards Evening on Sunday following our nomination for
Active Schools Primary School of the Year.
The winner of each category will be announced at the Celebration Evening on Sunday so wish us luck!
High School Update
As you are aware, discussions are ongoing with City of Edinburgh Council regard the future High School provision for Kirkliston pupils. I am aware that the KPSA has recently sent an information update to all households across the village to update on the present status. Representatives from the Council will be holding an event at the school on Monday evening between 18:30 and 20:30. This is an opportunity to hear more about the proposals and to share any thoughts you may have. The session will be held in the main hall, starting at 18:30 – entrance via the doors at the back of the school
You will have received a Scholastic Book fair leaflet yesterday to let you know that the book fair is in school. The book fair will be open during Parents’ Evening and children will have the opportunity to visit the book fair with their class.
I would like to remind you that all pupils should be wearing school uniform daily.
Our uniform incorporates a range of popular items of dress, e.g. sweatshirts, T-shirts.
Wearing school uniform contributes to a positive school ethos and helps avoid discrimination and reduces peer pressure to wear expensive designer clothing.
Our uniform guidelines are:
Black/Grey skirt, pinafore or trousers
White blouse/shirt or School polo shirt
Navy pullover, cardigan or sweatshirt
Black School shoes
Our blazer is black, with a school badge.
A stock of new sweatshirts, polo shirts and ties are available to purchase from the school office. Other items such as waterproof jackets and fleeces can be ordered by the office. There are also a number of pre-loved items available in the family room.
Entry to the school
In the interests of enhanced security and pupil safety, we would like to remind you that parents/ carers should only enter school through the main entrance and NOT through pupil entrances/exits. Once in the school parents/carers should remain in the foyer area unless accompanied by a member of school staff. Parent/carers are NOT permitted to enter teaching areas and classrooms unaccompanied. Parent/carers who wish to speak to a class teacher should make an appointment at the office. Thank you for your understanding.
Following a number of incidents recently, we have taken the decision to make the ‘blue grass’ area outside the main entrance a learning area only. Pupils should not use this space during breaks and lunchtimes.
Please remind pupils to cross the road with the designated crossing patrollers and not at the traffic island. We have recently had a worried motorist comment on the dangers of children crossing on the bend.
