HT Blog 27th April 2018

Dear families,

I thought that summer was arriving last week but it seems to have disappeared as quickly as it arrived! Please read on to find out what’s coming up at Kirkliston PS.

Building Resilience Assembly

Mrs Fowler and Mrs Taylor led a powerful assembly on ‘Challenging your Mindset’ today as we launch the next unit of the Building Resilience Programme. They we ably helped by four P7s who shared their own experiences of fixed and growth mindsets. Keep an eye out for the associated homework activity next week.

Al fresco dining

Once the days start to warm up we will be allowing the P3-7 pupils to take their packed lunches outside to eat if they want. The pupil council have been designing signs that we will display when it is warm enough to do so. This is optional so pupils can remain inside if they prefer.

New Playground

I am delighted to let you know that the new playground area will be opening to pupils in the very near future. We have a few health and safety activities to complete and a rota to devise first. In order to give the pupils the ownership of this I am in the process of setting up a playground committee which will comprise of pupils, teachers, PSAs, the janitor, the business manager and some willing parents. We already have staff volunteers and we will be recruiting pupils next week.

The role will include:

  • Naming the playground area
  • Carrying out risk and risk-benefit assessments
  • Coming up with a set of rules for the playground
  • Training others how to use the playground safely
  • Creating checklists for daily, weekly and termly H&S checks
  • Carrying out daily, weekly and termly H&S checks
  • Creating a rota for the playground

Once these actions are complete, the committee will show the rest of the school how to use the area safely, class teachers will take their pupils out to use the new playground (one class at a time) and then the playground will open to all, following the rota of course!

Any pupils who are interested in being part of the committee should ask their class teachers for an application form on Monday. Applications should be completed at home by Friday and handed in to me (Mrs Henderson). We will then arrange interviews for the following week.

Any parents who are interested should contact the school office (No need to attend an interview!)
