HT Blog 29th June 2018

It’s finally here! I hope you all have a fantastic break over the summer. I have really enjoyed my first two terms at Kirkliston and look forward to seeing you all again after the holidays. I would also like to wish the P7s the very best for their future and I hope they will stay in touch.

P7

All P7s had a very successful 3 day transition last week and came back full of stories about High School but ready to celebrate their last week of Primary School. They presented a lovely Leavers’ Assembly reflecting on their journey so far and looking forward to a ‘Galactic’ future. This was followed by an opportunity to have refreshments with family members and lots of photo opportunities. A brilliant show followed the next day with P7s challenging the staff across a variety of activities including dance, gymnastics, football, music and lots more! The P7s narrowly beat the staff but there may be an enquiry about the scoring!! On Thursday the P7s had an opportunity to share their yearbook and get staff autographs and messages. Finally, the children across P1 to P6 and all the staff formed a Guard of Honour throughout the school to give our wonderful P7s a great send off. We wish them all well in their future education journeys and we’re sure we’ll hear of many successes.

Staffing News

Please see attached the class organisation for next session. I would also like to this opportunity to update you on some further staffing news.

You will already know that Mrs Karen McCay has been successful in gaining a secondment as Acting DHT at Duddingston for the next year. Mrs Linda Hughes has been successful in taking up the post of Acting PT in the school in her absence. Mrs Fiona Kay has recently been appointed as permanent PT in the nursery. We also welcome Mrs Shelagh Andrews as EYO in the nursery.

Other staff that we will be welcoming to our Kirkliston team are:

  • Miss Claire Smith and Mrs Anne Brusatte now have permanent positions with us.
  • Miss Kara Mudie will continue working with us next session.
  • Mrs Jenny Quinn will be returning and Miss Naomi Still will be joining us as class teachers.

The following staff will be leaving us for pastures new and we would like to wish them all well:

  • Miss Louise Wilson, Miss Caoimhe Lawlor, Miss Paula Preston, Mr Harry Lawrie, Mrs Anne Roy.

Finally, it is with a heavy heart that we announce that Mrs Fowler will be retiring in October. Mrs Fowler has been a part of the team for over 20 years and it will feel very strange without her. A more formal goodbye will follow next session so we hope she enjoys her very last school summer holiday.

MAKE YOUR STREET A PLAY STREET THIS SUMMER

Following a hugely successful pilot project last summer, Play Streets has now been adopted as official Council policy.

A consultation exercise carried out from December 2017 to January 2018 to evaluate the Edinburgh Playing Out pilot found widespread support for the scheme.

Respondents overwhelmingly felt the sessions had:

– given children a safe and beneficial opportunity to play (90%)
– resulted in children making new friends (83%)
– increased children’s sense of belonging in the community (88%)
– fostered increased community connections between different generations (90%)

Apply today to close your street for a play session over the summer holidays!
