School Playground

New Playground Area

The playground works are complete and all classes use the new space on a rota basis.  P1 children have access to this space every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon as part of our Play Based Learning initiative.  All classes can use this space during the school day.

We have established a new playground committee who have created a playground risk assessment, daily check record and weekly check record.  The committee consists of pupils, teachers, support staff and parents.

The committee’s next steps are to:
  • Organise pupils for the daily check rota
  • Look at the signage and finalise this (safety rules and a possible one way system)
  • Organise tidy-up/maintenance afternoon (parents and pupils)
  • Secure red flag, organise storage box and tools

We plan to purchase new storage containers and  Outdoor learning resources for this area also.  Children from P1 to P3 have been consulted about what they like about the area so far and how we can improve it further.  There are lots of super ideas to consider and to move forward with.

As part of our improvements in the playground we now have several willow insect sculptures around the school. these can be found at our welcome garden by the front gate and near the entrance to the school.

As part of our extension work, we now have a fantastic 3G pitch for pupils to use at playtime and lunchtime. We also use it for PE lessons during the day, and have a range of equipment to use on it.

We are working on making changes to our school garden this year. Working with Edinburgh Living Landscapes and the pupil Gardening club, we have removed some overgrown shrubs and broken fencing and are preparing the ground for planting in the spring. We hope to have some vegetables , herbs and colourful shrubs in the garden and to plant an area of wildflowers nearby.

Our willow den is taking shape and we hope to see it start to grow in the spring! It has 2 tunnel entrances and is built around one of the trees in the playground. Our thanks to the KPSA for funding this as it was one of the items pupils were keen to see in the playground when they were asked.
