I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to Kirkliston for session 2018-19 and I extend a very special welcome to the families and staff who have recently joined us. In addition to the staff I mentioned in my last blog, Mr Malcolm Phillips has also joined us as our new Facilities Technician, or the janny as the children call him! We had a number of weddings in the staff team over the holidays which led to some name changes. Miss McCammon is now Mrs McCutcheon and Miss Burns is now Mrs McLaren.
Please make sure all pupils come to school with indoor shoes and PE kit. The children look so smart in their new uniforms so please make sure each item is named. Waterproof jackets are also useful at this time of year, as some pupils have found out! If you still require uniform, the family team have quite a number of second hand items in excellent condition so please feel free to pop in and have a look.
The children have been enjoying the new playground area since our return to school. The playground committee have been working with Miss Mudie and Mr Phillips to create daily and weekly checklists to make sure the playground is maintained and safe to use.
Please remember that scooters and bikes should not be ridden in the playground. Please remind children, and adults, to push them until they leave the school grounds. This will help to keep everyone safe.
French Phrase of the Week
The 1+2 Language Leaders have introduced the phrase of the week or L’expression de la semaine, which will encourage us all to learn a different French phrase every week. Each Friday at assembly they will introduce a phrase for us to learn and use the following week. Today it was Bonjour, which means hello. We would really appreciate it if you could give this a go at home too, you could even try using it in the school office.
Primary 7s have already begun finding out about the process of electing our new House Captains and Vice Captains. These are extremely important leadership roles in our school and the elections are always eagerly anticipated. There are some changes this year and one of these is the introduction of an Application Form – this will include a Personal statement and 3 questions and P7s will have 2 weeks to complete and hand these in. 20/8/18 – 2/9/18.
Interviews will then be held on 13 September by Mrs Henderson and a guest. The successful candidates will have an opportunity to present speeches at House Meetings on 21 September when voting will also take place.
It’s great to see how many P7 children are intending to take part in this and to support the school. Not everyone can be successful of course, but there are lots of other leadership opportunities to look forward to throughout the year.
We are very fortunate to welcome a German visitor to the school for the next 3 weeks. Yannic Bahr will spend some time in classes throughout the school and will share aspects of language learning and also teach us all about cultural aspects of Germany. He will have an opportunity on Monday to meet all the children. Mrs Graham, our Languages Coordinator, has lots of plans to make the best use of Yannic’s time with us.
Our new P1s have settled well into their first few days at school. Class teachers have been impressed by how confident and independent most of them are and hopefully this will continue. Monday will be their first full day and first school lunch, which will be very exciting (and tiring) for them. Please could all parents stand well back from the lines to ensure all the children can be seen by the adult dropping off or picking up.
P1 Curriculum Evening
We would like to invite all P1 parents/carers to attend the P1 Curriculum Evening on Tuesday 28th August at 6:30pm. This will be an opportunity to hear about the curriculum in P1 and also what you can do to support them at home. This is presented by the P1 staff and is an essential part of sharing your child’s learning. We will meet in the school hall at 6:30 and then move up to the P1 classrooms.
All our returning nursery children are already looking as if they’ve never been away and have had a great start to the new term. Our new starts are doing well and it is lovely to see some younger siblings now starting with us. Mrs Fiona Kay, our new PT has thoroughly enjoyed her first week and Mrs Shelagh Andrews our new EYO is also enjoying her new role. We are waiting on the sandpit roof getting fixed so that the garden area can be fully functioning again. The nursery are hopefully receiving a trainee young apprentice in Early Learning and Childcare who will benefit greatly from the expertise of our very experienced nursery practitioners. We will let you know when they are due to start.
Meet the Teacher
We will have a meet the teacher afternoon for parents of pupils in P2-P7 on Thursday 30th August at 1:30 in the hall and then classrooms thereafter. This is an opportunity for you to hear about the year ahead, meet your child’s teacher and get to know the class routines. I look forward to seeing you all.
