Assembly

In assembly this week we celebrated National Pet Month. We heard some stories about pets, learned about dog safety, how to keep your dog cool this summer, and how to look after your pet. There was a Kirky Staff Pet Quiz and we shared some pictures of pupil pets too. We would like to create a Pupil Pet Gallery for next assembly so please post a photo of your pet on teams if you would like it to be featured.

If you would like to watch any of the videos from assembly the links are below:

May Day Holiday

Monday and Tuesday are both holidays for pupils, so we lookforward to seeing you all again on Wednesday 5th May. Fingerscrossed for some sunshine in the long weekend.

Health and Safety

At pick up time please check the sign held by a member of the SLT to see which classes are being dismissed. P1 parents are welcome to wait on the grass behind the bike shelter until the P2 parents are clear. We will call you forward when it is time.

Pupils should not play on the adventure playground, or other areas of the playground, at the end of the school day and should be closely supervised by parents/carers. We still need to be very careful with infection control and mixing bubbles on school grounds could jeopardise the hard work we have been doing as a community.

Active Schools

As we move into Tier 3 and restrictions are updated, we are delighted that our Active Schools co-ordinator is able to begin working with classes again, within health and safety guidelines. P4-7 classes will have an extra PE session with Ms Brownlee, focussing on playground games during the coming weeks.

Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood Programme

We will begin to use the new national resource for teaching relationships, sexual health and parenthood education this term. The complete resource is available to view at https://rshp.scot/.  Our RSHP curriculum has been in place for several years. This is a new national resource which has been designed to help schools deliver the existing RSHP curriculum.

Educating children about sexuality and relationships is about developing their confidence and self-esteem, knowledge of their bodies and the skills they need to build relationships. One of the main ways that children learn about relationships and sexuality is from their parents can carers.’ – Healthy Respect (NHS)

As a staff we have studied this resource and created a plan for its delivery throughout the school. We have ensured that all content is age and stage appropriate for the learners. Class teachers will use their termly newsletters to let you know which lessons are being taught. Please get in touch with the school if you have any questions regarding the resource or its delivery. The website also has a FAQ section https://rshp.scot/faq/.

This week in Nursery …

The children who are starting school in August have started the ‘Play on Pedal’ training programme.  The children were very excited to take part in this event.  They have learned how to put a helmet on safely by doing the ‘wobble’ test, named the different parts of the bike and practised balance and gliding skills to enable them to eventually ride a pedal bike.  In the garden the (Butterfly) children picked white flowers to decorate the wooden jeep, this became a wedding car! Next week the children have planned a wedding service to take place in nursery.  In the Rainbow room the children decided they wanted the house corner to become a living room and a shop and they have made their own TV.  The Wednesday/Thursday children have planned a movie night for next week with popcorn and marshmallows!  The children have enjoyed making their own bug rings and bracelets, using pipe cleaners and drawing pictures of bugs.

Community News

Welcome to our New Families

We have welcomed a few new families to Kirkliston Primary School since Easter who might not be aware of our Start and End of school day procedures, so I have shared them below. They are also a good reminder for the rest of us.

Please remember to follow FACTS at all times:

We have been working really hard to try and make drop off and pick up as slick as possible but being the largest primary school in the city brings some challenges. Drop off is going really well but pick up time will inevitably involve a degree of congestion. To try and mitigate the risks please try to do the following:

Ensure that you wear a mask both inside and outside (if crowded) the school grounds.
Pupil are not required to wear masks but may do so if they wish .
Only one family member should drop-off/ pick up your child/children.
Encourage P4-7 (and P3 where appropriate) to come into and leave school unaccompanied, arrange a meeting place out with the school grounds if necessary.
Follow the one-way system; enter through Stirling road gate and leave through Pentland View Road gate.
Accompanied children may arrive through the car park gate between 9:00am and 9:10am
At pick up, P1 parents should wait until the P2 parents have cleared the playground before entering.
P3 parents and unaccompanied P3-7 pupils may also leave through the Stirling Road Gate.
Ensure that you are at least two metres away from other adults both inside and outside the school grounds.
Pupils should not play on the Adventure Playgroundwhilst waiting for older siblings. Please supervise all children when on school grounds.
If your child or any member of your household displays any symptoms (new, continuous cough, high temperature, loss or change to sense of taste or smell) please isolate and book a test.

Back to School: a practical guide for parents/carers and carers

There have been many changes for children and families.  We know that children may be feeling uncertain about the return to school.

We will welcome and support everyone to make the transition back to school a positive experience.  Staff will be in the playground to help and support parents/carers and carers at the start and end of the school day.

We appreciate your support with the temporary changes that are needed to ensure the safety of everyone.  We will review arrangements regularly and they may need to change.

Physical distancing

There must be physical distancing between adults and between adults and children from different families. Only one parent should accompany their child/children to school.

Access into school for parents and carers will be by appointment only for everyone’s safety.

Face Coverings

Face coverings should be worn by adults at all times where they cannot keep two metres from other adults and/or children and young people in primary and secondary schools (with some exceptions in P1-P2).

It is important to note that face coverings should also be worn by parents/carers and other visitors to any school site (whether entering the building or otherwise), including parents/carers at drop-off and pick-up.

Hygiene

We will continue to ensure regular handwashing when children are in school.  There will be hand sanitisers throughout the building.  Enhanced cleaning will happen every day.

What your child needs to bring to school

Please bring

a small school bag

a healthy snack

A full bottle of water

a packed lunch (not needed if school provides)

a weather appropriate jacket

Do not bring any personal items, e.g. football, toys, pencil case. This is to remove the temptation to share these items, thus reducing the risk of infection or these items getting lost or damaged.

Uniform

Children should wear clothing that can be washed often, this can include school uniform.

Children should not wear blazers or any clothing which needs to be dry cleaned.

Pupils will be learning more outdoors so should wear appropriate clothing and footwear for PE and the weather. A change of clothes should be provided for inclement weather.

Lunch Arrangements

Lunches will continue to be eaten in the classroom.

Ventilation

For classrooms the regulations stipulate 2 air changes per hour and a temperature of 17 degrees C. We aim to achieve this by:

partially opening doors and windows to provide ventilation while reducing draughts
opening high level windows in preference to low level to reduce draughts
purging spaces by opening windows, vents and external doors (e.g. between classes, during break and lunch, when a room is unused, or at other suitable intervals if a space is occupied for long periods at a time)
classrooms in the newest part of the building benefit from mechanical ventilation which operates while the school is occupied.
providing flexibility in permissible clothing while indoors.
designing seating plans to reflect individual student/staff temperature preferences.
adjusting indoor heating to compensate for cold air flow from outside (e.g. higher system settings, increased duration)

The full guidance can be found here:

https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-guidance-on-reducing-the-risks-in-schools/pages/scientific-and-public-health-advice/#ventilation

Access to school/office

There is no access to the school office for parents/carers/carers, unless it is an emergency.

Communication: please telephone 0131 333 3260 or admin@kirkliston.edin.sch.uk

Please return any forms from the school via your child (the office will not be able to accept them).
