Due to the short week, this blog is a bumper double-issue. I hope you all survived storm Ali, we’re certainly glad we kept all the children inside on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the P6 Outdoor Learning Challenge was cancelled as a result of the weather but we will make sure they have another equally exciting opportunity later in the year.
Gold School Sport Award
We are delighted to announce that Kirkliston Primary School has been awarded a sportscotland Gold School Sport Award for 2018-2021.
The Gold School Sport Award is recognition of our school’s achievements in putting sport at the heart of our school’s planning, practice and ethos.
The Gold Award also highlights that our school has shown excellent practice across the core areas of the Award and demonstrated an on-going commitment to increase young people’s opportunities and engagement in physical education, school sport and leadership and provide clear pathways to life-long participation in sport.
I would like to add a special thank you to (PE) Miss Smith for her hard work and dedication to sport in school.

Nursery
Congratulations to all our village show winners, we have shared the children’s successes in nursery this week during group time and displayed the winners for parents and carers to see. We used our apples from our garden to make apple and pear crumble for snack, the children loved helping to make the crumble and enjoyed eating it too! This week we issued our Achievement Apples for children to take home and record home achievements. We have enjoyed sharing our achievements at group time and hanging the apples on the trees in the entrance for people to read.
Tooth brushing started this week in Nursery, all the children have enjoyed talking about dental hygiene and brushing their teeth together at group time. This week Mrs Andrews has made potato soup with the children and again, like our apple crumble, it was a big hit at snack time. Next week we are celebrating European Day of Languages, each day we will be finding out about a different European Country, exploring the language, culture, food and more.
Footballers
Following last Wednesday’s Trial 1 for the Edinburgh P7 Select Football Squad we have had 3 pupils successfully move to the next stage. Congratulations!
The trial was extremely competitive and it was a difficult selection process for the coaching staff and unfortunately, they cannot take everyone through to Trial 2. Being nominated for Trial 1 is a massive achievement in itself and they can be proud to have represented their school at such an event.
House Captains
Our new house captains were formally welcomed at assembly today. We have 12 this year due to the growing number of pupils in the school. We also have 12 vice-house captains and together they will support the presentation of our star of the week certificates each week. We would like to say a big thank you to all the P7s who put themselves forward for the roles. The quality of applications was very high and you should be very proud of yourselves.
Assembly
Last week Mrs Taylor and Miss Valentine led a very informative assembly about 1 in 5: Raising Awareness of Child Poverty. We are taking part in this City of Edinburgh initiative this session and we hope to ‘Poverty Proof’ our school.
Today we welcomed Colin MacPhie for the first time this session. He shared a story about helping each other which complemented our Building Resilience unit ‘Take a moment”.
Internet Safety Evening
Do you find it difficult keeping an eye on what your child is accessing on the internet?
Do you find it challenging knowing what your child is doing and who they are talking to on social media?

Then please come along to our Internet Safety or “prepare yourself for what is coming” Evening on Wednesday 26th September 7pm-8pm where our community police officers will share some strategies to help you keep your children safe on-line.

Parking
I would like to remind families to be considerate when parking their cars at drop off and pick up times. Please do not block residents’ driveways. Our children’s safety is paramount.
