P2C performed a fabulous assembly this morning to mark the end of Languages Week Scotland retelling the familiar story of the Very Hungry Caterpillar in French; La petite chenille qui fait des trous. As if that wasn’t enough they also sang Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in French. I have attached the lyrics so that you can have a go at home!

In the P3-7 assembly the language leaders shared some of the fantastic activities that have been happening around school for Languages Week Scotland. Find out more below. The P7s shared a video of their week at Benmore and told us why everyone should go if they get the chance. On this week’s episode of Kirky News we heard some Scots Poetry from P5, we heard all about The Day The Crayons Quit from P2 and a P4 child shared news about a story she is writing for the BBC 500 word competition. So much exciting learning taking place across the school.
Nursery
This week in nursery ….
As part of Languages Week Scotland we have been practising our French and sharing home languages. We also had a Grandparent from one of our afternoon children come in to share her knowledge of the Welsh language which the children enjoyed. Miss Kiely (Acting Depute Head) also visited the nursery this week to work with the nursery team and meet our children, she is looking forward to meeting parents and carers over the next few weeks. A reminder that next week the Nursery is closed for the February holiday, we wish all our families a good break and look forward to welcoming you all back on Monday 17th February.
Languages Week Scotland
We have had lots of exciting things happening in our school this week.
P1 had a visit from a mum who told P1 all about living in Poland and shared some Polish with them.
P2B have been busy with #edinburghloveslanguages and #scotlandloveslanguages. We have learned how to count to 10 and play number lotto in French. We also learned about the colours in French and listened to this to help us colour in some animals pictures.
P2 had a visit from a gran who shared her experience of growing up in Wales and speaking Welsh. P2 also have a visit from a parent who talked about Greece.
3A have learned how to say hello (hallo) and number 1-10 in German
P4C learnt facts about Polish culture, made flags and had a go at singing head shoulders knees and toes in Polish. Our Polish speaking pupils were a great help for ensuring we had accurate pronunciation!
P5A have been learning all about Turkey and learning some Turkish language. We had a visit from a big brother who shared his experiences and taught us some Turkish. P5B have been learning some Gaelic this week.
As part of Languages Week Scotland, Primary 6 took part in a cluster event at QHS. Each class participated in 3 activities which included Jenga, quizzes and even some Spanish dancing!
P6A have also been learning some Polish in class.
Mrs Graham popped into P7 this week and played some Spanish games with Mr Wood’s class!
P5-7 had Spanish dancing with Pilar – we all loved it!
Sleep Week
We will be having a Sleep Awareness Week in school from Monday 9th -Friday 13th March. During the week each class will have lessons about the importance sleep plays in keeping our bodies healthy. We will hold two parent information sessions, see poster below.
The week will end with a ‘Sleep Walk’ which will complement the Charity Champions’ plans for Comic Relief. More details to follow.
World Book Day 2020
At Kirkliston Primary School, we aim to create a reading culture and promote our love of reading. We believe that reading has the power to change lives and that developing a love of reading in childhood can have a huge impact on educational attainment and future wellbeing.
During week commencing 2nd March, we will we will host a Pop-Up Book Shop provided by Far from the Madding Crowd, a local book shop in Linlithgow. They will be selling a range of children’s books at a cost of £5 as well as a selection of the £1 World Book Day books, for which all children will be issued with tokens. The World Book Day token can be used towards the cost of a book or to claim a special World Book Day book released this year. The Pop-Up Book Shop will be open from Monday 2nd March – Friday 6th March. Each class will have a timetabled slot to go along to the shop and buy a book should they wish to.
Throughout the week, there will also be a Book Swap Shop where children can use a Kirky Cash Book Token to get a different book. For this, we are looking for donations of “good quality” children’s books which you no longer read at home. These should be sent into school with your child and given to their teacher by Wednesday 26th February.
This year, instead of dressing up as favourite book characters, all children will participate in a fun activity to turn a potato into a book character! Each child will be issued with a design brief which can be completed at home or in class. They can use this to list resources they need to make their book character and draw a sketch. On World Book Day, each class will be provided with potatoes and time will be given to create a book character from the potato.
