Hello Primary 1!
We hope you’re all having a great week with your family. We miss you all so much but it’s been lovely being able to keep in touch with you through email. Thank you for sending us photos of your wonderful work. We particularly loved seeing the beautiful rainbows in your windows- they put a big smile on our faces!
This week’s home learning grid has lots of activities for you to enjoy. As always, these are suggested tasks and we understand that you might not be able to complete them all. Please choose the activities that suit you and your family best. We love seeing examples of your work (or any other fun activities you get up to) so feel free to share your experiences with us on Twitter or via email.
Over the next few weeks, we will learn all about measure in maths. We are going to begin by looking at weight and we will explore the different words we can use to describe the weight of an object. In Primary 1, we mostly measure and compare the weight of objects using non-standard units, such as cubes and counters. You could use different objects in your home to explore weight by talking about which item feels lighter/heavier. If you have scales at home, you could extend your learning further by weighing different items and ordering them by weight. We are continuing with subtraction as our numeracy focus this week and have uploaded two worksheets for you to practise subtracting with a number line. Instead of printing the worksheet off, you could copy the questions into your jotter and use a ruler as a number line. Your teacher has also created a subtraction quiz for you to complete on Sumdog.
The new sound this week is ‘oo- look at a book’ and Mrs Hunter has created a literacy video on the school YouTube channel to help you with this sound. After watching, you could complete the ‘oo’ sheet in your handwriting booklet. Remember to fill in the Microsoft form for ‘oo’ as this lets your teacher see how you’re getting on with your reading and spelling. We have created some spelling practice on Sumdog for the ‘oo’ sound for you to try too. Our ‘Look at a Book’ writing task is a great chance for you to practise your new sound and talk about a book you have recently read. Remember, if you are finding the ‘oo’ sound tricky, you can try the revision activities for the ‘v’ and ‘w’ sounds.
We hope you are enjoying our new ‘Busy Body’ topic. This week, we are going to learn about the importance of having a healthy, balanced diet. The P1 teachers have had fun creating some healthy recipes and have created a short video for you to watch on YouTube. You will have the chance to design your own healthy lunchbox and even try out a recipe yourselves. We would love to see your tasty creations so please send any photos to admin@kirkliston.edin.sch.uk and your teacher will reply with some feedback. While you are choosing a recipe or helping to cook a meal, have a think about why it is healthy and how you could make it even healthier by adding or swapping ingredients. You could also use your new maths skills to measure and compare the weight of different ingredients.
We would also like to remind you to have a look at some other grids on the school website, including the PE, Health and Wellbeing, and Support for Learning grids. Additionally, Mrs Henderson and the Senior Leadership Team have included a list of general websites to support learning on their blog post, titled ‘HT Blog Friday 24th April 2020’. All of the Head Teacher blog posts can be found in the ‘Latest News’ section of the school website. Thank you very much for all your feedback on the home learning activities we have set so far. We really appreciate your support during these challenging times and we will use feedback to help inform future home learning grids.
Have a super week and we look forward to seeing all your fantastic home learning soon!
From Mrs Fairley, Mrs Hunter, Mrs Monteath, and Miss Spink 😊
P.S. We’ve had a few technical issues over on YouTube – hopefully the links in the grid work but if not, just search for Kirkliston Primary School on YouTube and you’ll be able to find the P1 (Early Level) videos there along with others. We’ll also put a tweet out with the links to the videos.
