Good Morning Primary 3!
We hope you are your families are keeping well. This is the 10th week of home learning and we are very proud of every single one of you for managing so well during this difficult time. There is brilliant work being produced and lots of learning taking place and this is fantastic! Here is your grid for this week:
As always, keep looking at the PE and Health and Wellbeing grids on their respective pages for subject specific activities and check out the SFL page if your child normally attends a group or they are particularly struggling with accessing the grids.
Keep on smiling!

Reading
The main task for reading this week is a Reverse Picture It. We are very familiar now with completing Picture It’s but let’s see if you can complete it the other way round!
First observe the beach scene carefully: what is happening? Who is there? Where are each of the people placed? Your task is to write as many detailed sentences as you can to describe the picture. Remember a normal ‘Picture It’ text would contain lots of specific information including the position of items in relation to other parts of the picture, colours and sizes. This is your feedback activity this week. When you have completed it please send a picture to your teacher at admin@kirkliston.edin.sch.uk with your name and class in the subject header.
As always, please continue to read as much as you can at home! Why not have a go at completing the ‘Reading Bingo’ grid which challenges you to read different types of texts. This is your chance to explore lots of different genres and find some that you like.
Below you will find links to free online stories or audiobooks which you can read along or listen to if you wish.

Writing
This week our writing task is the same as last week but with a different picture. We have used sheets like this in class to improve our vocabulary.
Look at the picture of the cows in the middle of the snapshot mat. Read the “Things to think about” questions and discuss these with someone. Then go on to complete all the task boxes with “Next” as the final task to be completed. This activity is designed to get you consider what a picture can make us think about; our feelings, the feelings of those in the picture and the different possible outcomes.
Make sure you use capital letters and full stops, wow words and neat writing.
Spelling
This week’s spelling is all about revision. Get an adult to test you on the sounds we have learned at home so far. It is important to revise the spelling sounds we have learned to make sure we know the sounds really well. Practice makes perfect! Don’t worry if you get a few words wrong, making mistakes is how we learn and improve. What’s important is that we use our mistakes we make to improve our learning.
Use the Powerpoint with all the mild, spicy and hot words for all the sounds we have learned at home. An adult should read the words from the list and you can write them down. Get an adult to check your answers. For any words you have spelled wrongly try writing it three times using dot dash and count, this should help you remember it and where the important sounds are. If it turns out that there are a few words using the same sound you find tricky you can find the Powerpoints on the blog post to practise that sound again.

Maths
For numeracy this week we are using our addition skills to complete a problem-solving task. This task will involve a bit of trial and error which can prompt lots of discussion about method and strategy along with practising addition. The problem-solving sheet can be found below:
In maths this week we are focusing on right angles. The video below will help to explain what a right angle is:
Using the right-angle checker or by creating your own, your task is to search around your house (and outdoors) to see if you can find right angles around you. There is a sheet to record your findings where you could draw or write your answers:
The final maths task this week is to think about directional language before leading a member of your family on a journey. There is a PowerPoint available below to help prompt discussion along with a help sheet to assist you during the task. You can be as creative as you wish by including obstacles or having them travel between rooms in your house:
Optional sheets – Can be printed, written on paper or discussed:
Topic
This week we are thinking about eating locally and in season food. Certain foods are picked and harvested at certain times of the year because this is when conditions for them to grow are most suitable and so they taste their best. Watch the video and read the information on the Young Scot website https://young.scot/get-informed/national/eating-local-eating-seasonal to learn more about eating local and seasonal food and the benefits of this. Check your learning by trying the quiz https://bit.ly/3h56H0l.
If you would like to learn more about what foods are in season when have a look or download the Royal Highland Education Trust’s – The Good Food Learning Resource PDF here https://www.rhet.org.uk/media/1188/calendar-v1-web.pdf. It shows what happens on the farm and the fishing industry each month and what we could do in school.
The calendar on https://foodanddrink.scot/resources/seasonality-calendar/ has a list of foods which are in season each month in Scotland. Can you create a healthy balanced meal using foods which are in season this month? Draw and label your meal in your jotter or print off this plate template and food ideas to design your healthy balanced meal using all food which are in season right now.

Art / Technologies
This week in Expressive Arts you have an invention challenge! Think of a problem that you, your family or other people in the world might face. For example this could be a large scale problem such as plastic pollution or something closer to home such as always finding odd socks!
Task – Your challenge if you choose to accept it is to design an invention which solves or helps to solve the problem you identified. Then you need to make your invention using recyclable materials.
- Before you begin, plan out your invention on paper and label the parts. Make sure you think about the following design features:
- What will it look like? (e.g. Size of invention, colours, shapes)
- Does it have special features? (e.g. wings, can go underwater, talks).
- Cost of the product and the target audience (who it is designed for or who would buy it).
- Think carefully about the materials you will use to make your product.
Use your creativity and have fun!
