Hello Primary 4!

Please click on this link to view your final home learning grid of the year!

P4 Home Learning 17th-26th June

Your focus task this week is to write a letter to your new teacher about yourself and to draw a self-portrait. We look forward to receiving these at this email address; admin@Kirkliston.edin.sch.uk

We are incredibly proud of all your achievements this year and look forward to seeing you at the start of Primary 5. We hope you have a wonderful summer break.

Take care and keep smiling!
Mrs Quinn, Miss Afzal and Miss Maxwell

Additional information to support this weeks Home Learning Grid can be found below.

Maths and Numeracy
For our final home learning, there is a Primary 4 stage competition on Sumdog to take part in and will include questions from different topics.

There is also an Edinburgh Maths Contest starting on Friday 19th and is on until Thursday 25th June. Pupils can choose one or both to do. We have also included challenges below:

Mild Numeracy Activity
Medium Numeracy Activity
Hot Numeracy Activity

Spelling
Ask your child to select the level of words (Mild, Medium or Hot) and write them out 3 times using the technique Look Say Cover Write Check, then complete 1 or 2 of the spelling activities listed on the task sheet. All children will be used to doing this as part of our Primary 4 weekly spelling routine.

As it is almost the summer holidays, we have chosen a summer spelling word theme!

P4 Spelling Word Lists and Activities

Spelling word lists have also been uploaded to Sumdog. Although these words do not appear as a list they are embedded within the games and challenges played.

Writing
In preparation for the new term, we would like pupils to write a letter to their new teacher. We are aware that this information has not been given out to parents or carers yet, so they can begin their letters with:

  • Dear new teacher,
  • To my Primary 5 teacher,
  • To my future teacher,

Pupil should be encouraged to write about all the important details that their new teacher should know about them. Please see the checklist below with ideas that pupils might want to include.

All About Me Checklist

For the self- portrait, this can be drawn on any piece of paper and pupils can decide on how much detail they wish to add to this.

Listening and Talking
This week you can listen the story ‘In It Together’ read by Mrs Quinn by following this link;

After listening children can then use the template below or create their own emotions fortune teller.

On the big squares write down four emotions that may be experienced before returning to school after the holidays. For example, worried, scared, excited, overwhelmed.

Inside write 8 numbers then underneath the flaps brainstorm strategies to cope with the emotions we may be feeling. For example, talk to somebody about your worries or take 4 deep breaths.

Reading
This week we are learning about different musical instruments. Follow this link for this week’s Form reading activity; https://bit.ly/3d9J9EI

STEM

Watch the video below for some ideas, use the instructions provided or use your own ideas.

This week
s design and building challenge is to create your own functioning musical instrument. This can be as basic or as complex as you like. Get creative with things from around your house, you could use recycling, pots and pans, cutlery or even food like dried rice. REMEMBER always ask an adults permission before you get started – you don’t want to end up using anything unsafe or that was meant for tonight’s dinner!!

Music
There are a few music themed activities in this week’s grid For this activity you will learn about musical notation from watching the clip below. It will teach you about beat, rhythm and the different kinds of musical notes as well as rests.

Now you’ve learnt the basics grab the instrument you made in this weeks STEM challenge activity or just clap along and have fun to the rhythms in this video.  This can be quite tricky to get right at first, the most important thing is to just join in and have fun. Music should make you smile 😊

Extra challenges:
1. Create your own rhythm using a variety of musical notes.
2. Clap along to the beat or rhythm of your favourite song
3. Get the whole family involved and create a band. Use household objects for different instruments and play along together. Bonus points for posting a picture of your Kirky family band on our school twitter @KirklistonPS !!!!

Health and Wellbeing
This week we would like to help everyone focus on the day ahead and help the children to channel their thoughts and feelings in a positive way. With the summer holidays approaching and the uncertainty of school in August children may be experiencing a mixture of feelings and emotions. Children can use the templates below or create their own Weekly Wellbeing Journal.
