Support for Learning Home Learning Week 2
Apr 1, 2020
Welcome to the Kirkliston Primary Support for Learning page.
Hello from Mrs O’Hara (P1 – P4) and Mrs Benzie (P5 – P7). We hope that you are all well and having fun while learning at home.
It was lovely to hear how you are getting on and see some of your work. You are all so creative! Keep sending us your pictures and any questions you have. We are here to help in any way we can.
Please use the link below to access the Microsoft form to get in touch and we will try to respond in the best way we can.
Remember, do what you can, but please do not stress. Learning can take place in many different ways and in many different places – the sitting room, the bath/shower, the kitchen, looking out of the window or at bedtime! I have been spotting rainbows in windows when I have been out for my daily walks and yesterday did a Bear Hunt looking for teddies hiding at windows – it was great fun and made me smile!
Below are a few additional activities you can be doing this week to help with reading and maths.
Reading (and being read to) is the most important thing we want you to do each day. For as long as schools are closed, audible’s stories are free to stream on your desktop, laptop, phone or tablet.
TOP TIPS
* Make sure reading is enjoyable and have some fun!
-
Read books to each other – child reads their book to parent then parent reads / shares a more difficult book with the child.
-
Use funny voices for the different characters.
-
Remember to ask questions and encourage children to ask you questions too – this is a good skill to develop.

Ruth Miskin Training are providing daily phonics lessons on YouTube. These are clear and easy to follow 30 minute phonic lessons with trained Read Write Inc teachers which children can follow independently. The children in all our groups are very familiar with RWInc and the Speed Sounds.
Click on the link below and have a go following a lesson. Please let us know how you get on.
-
The Speed Sounds Set 2 lessons at 10am will be a useful learning activity for all the children in our groups.
-
The Speed Sounds Set 3 lessons at 10.30am would be a great learning activity for those children who are in Mrs Benzie’s Fresh Start groups.
Rough guide – P1 – P3 groups should work through Set 1 sounds and only move on to Set 2 when they are “SUPER SPEEDY” at reading the sounds.
P3 – P5 groups should work through Set 2 sounds and only move on to Set 3 when they are “SUPER SPEEDY” at reading the sounds.
P4 – P7 groups should work from where they are, moving to Set 3 sounds when confident.

P5 to P7 also have access to IDL which they regularly use in school. The children have been given their passwords and we would like to encourage the children to complete 2 modules three times a week if they can. Please let us know if you need any support with this. The children are confident using this in school and will hopefully be able to work on this independently at home. Click on the link below and click on ‘My IDL Login’ to get started.
Health and Well Being – Nurture
Below is a link to a PDF Through My Window. It suggests activities for helping children manage the mixed emotions they may have at this time. Mrs Miller and Mrs Benzie recommend it!
Numeracy
Many of you have been asking how you can help with numeracy and maths. Remember this does not have to be sitting at a table and doing sums! Make it fun and you will enjoy it more and so will the children!
Try
-
throwing a ball, sponge or cushion indoors or kicking a ball in the garden while counting in 2s, 5s, 10s, or reciting that tricky times table
-
telling the time and asking questions “how many minutes until lunch time?” “If we started reading at 9:30am and finished at 10:03am, how long did we read for?”
-
playing board games – Snakes and Ladders, Dominos etc. If you don’t have one you like, make one of your own! Let us know if you don’t have any dice and we will try to get one to you.
Let us know how you get on!
